Table of Contents

Inflatable fenders are widely used for ship berthing, port operations, ship-to-ship transfer and temporary marine protection. They are also commonly called pneumatic rubber fenders or Yokohama type fenders. Because they are filled with compressed air, inflatable fenders can absorb berthing energy while providing a flexible contact surface between vessels, docks or floating structures.

What Are Inflatable Fenders?

Inflatable fenders are rubber fenders with an internal air chamber. They are designed to absorb impact during berthing, mooring or ship-to-ship operations. Compared with solid rubber fenders, inflatable fenders are easier to handle for some applications and can provide high energy absorption with relatively low reaction force.

Inflatable Fenders and Pneumatic Rubber Fenders

In marine use, the term inflatable fender usually refers to a pneumatic rubber fender. Buyers may also call it a Yokohama type fender, floating pneumatic fender or air-filled marine fender. These names are often used for similar products, but the final specification should always be confirmed by size, pressure, net type and application.

Common Applications

Inflatable fenders can be used for ships, ports, docks, shipyards, offshore platforms and ship-to-ship transfer operations. They are often selected for temporary berthing, vessel repair, floating protection and marine projects where the fender needs to be moved or repositioned.

Size, Pressure and Net Type

The fender size, internal pressure and net type are important for correct selection. Common options include chain tire net type and sling type. Chain tire net fenders provide additional protection for the rubber body and are commonly used for heavier-duty applications. Sling type fenders are lighter and may be suitable for smaller or temporary berthing requirements.

Project Experience

YT Marine has produced inflatable fenders for different marine projects, including 3.3 m × 6.5 m fenders ordered in multiple batches for Nigeria Onne Port and pneumatic fenders collected for Shanghai shipyard use. Project requirements may vary by vessel size, berthing condition, quantity, delivery method and inspection needs.
