Steel Buoys for Navigation and Marine Marking
Navigation buoys help vessels identify channels, hazards, port approaches, restricted areas and other important waterway locations. A steel navigation buoy normally consists of a floating steel body, a visible superstructure and the required marking equipment.
Depending on the local navigation system and project drawing, the upper structure may include:
- Solar-powered marine lantern
- Solar panel and battery box
- Radar reflector
- Daymark or topmark
- Identification letters or numbers
- Maintenance platform, handrails or ladders
- Lifting lugs and mooring connection points
The colour, marking symbol and topmark configuration should be selected according to the applicable local authority requirements or the client’s approved design.

Custom Steel Mooring Buoys
In addition to navigation marking, steel buoys can be used as part of a vessel or offshore mooring arrangement. Larger buoy bodies are commonly designed with heavy-duty pad eyes, chain connection points, lifting lugs and other structural fittings to connect with anchors, shackles and mooring chains.
For these projects, buoyancy, structural strength, corrosion protection and connection details all need to be reviewed together. The chain diameter, grade, surface treatment, anchor arrangement and required test standards can be selected according to the working load and marine conditions.

In port, terminal and offshore projects, a steel buoy is often only one part of a wider mooring arrangement. Manufacturing According to Project Requirements
Steel buoy projects are normally custom-made rather than selected from a fixed standard model. Before production, the following information is helpful:
- Buoy type and application
- Required buoyancy or displacement
- Overall diameter, height and draft
- Steel plate thickness and structural requirements
- Topmark, lantern, solar panel or radar reflector requirements
- Mooring load and connection arrangement
- Chain, anchor, shackle and swivel requirements
- Coating specification and operating environment
- Required drawings, inspection documents or certificates
The buoy body and upper structure can be manufactured according to approved drawings. For larger or more complex projects, the steel structure, internal compartments, connection points and lifting arrangement should be confirmed before fabrication.

Corrosion Protection for Marine Use
A steel buoy works continuously in a harsh environment exposed to seawater, sunlight, waves and marine growth. A suitable coating system is therefore an important part of the project.
Coating requirements can be selected according to the installation location, expected service life and client specification. Typical options may include surface preparation, primer, epoxy intermediate coating and a final marine-grade topcoat. The final colour can also be confirmed according to the buoy marking requirement.
